Backup Exec Healthcheck

The health-check will take approximately 5 days depending on the size of the environment, this would typically consist of 3 days to collect and assess the information and 2 days to write up the findings, make recommendations and to document the configuration which would then be ready to present back in a easy to read PDF format.

The following areas will be covered by the health-check

Backup Components.

  • Backup Architecture - Disk, Tape, VTL, SAN, LAN
  • Backup Volumes - Daily / Weekly backup volumes, Client capacity
  • Backup Strategy - What is being backed up, when is is being backed up and for how long is it kept. (Fulls, Incremental'setc...)
  • Backup Software Configuration - How is it configured and does it follow best practice.
  • Backup Exec Job Design – Job configuration and Schedule and Window overlap.

Infrastructure /Architectural Analysis

  • Current Data Volume Analysis - What is currently being used
  • Data Throughput Capacity - What should be achievable with the hardware in the environment.
  • Server Build Analysis - Are the backup servers being utilised fully ?
  • Current Backup Performance – Throughput analysis.
  • Backup Reliability - Identify re-occurring issues with backups

General Software Configuration Review

  • Backup Software Version - Patch levels, differences in patch and release levels across Backup Exec servers and clients.
  • Device / Memory and Network buffer settings
  • Media and Device Management
  • Job Configuration Review
